Our Values-Based Education
Selected extracts from teachings by Phra Brahma Phacharayanamuni (Phra Ajahn Jayasaro):
“Rather than an education system which is geared to testing and to competition and to preparing people for a particular livelihood, the emphasis of Buddhist education is on teaching children how to learn, how to enjoy learning, and to love wisdom for its own sake. It teaches them emotional maturity, enabling them to make use of their knowledge to create a happy life for themselves and their family, and to contribute positively to the society in which they live. It in no way compromises on the work of preparing children to make a good livelihood, but it lets them see that life is deeper and richer than working in order to consume.”
Students need support that goes beyond academic achievement. They require the tools to adapt to change, manage emotions, think critically, and make ethical choices in a complex world. Panyaden’s approach to values-based education lays the groundwork for these essential qualities and fosters the intellectual, emotional, and moral growth that students need to live happy, fulfilling lives.
At the heart of our approach is the Panyaden Profile, a framework that nurtures development across four dimensions, preparing students not just for academic success, but for lives of purpose, wisdom, and genuine fulfilment.
Kaya Bhavana: Physical Development
Students learn about the body and its needs, capabilities, and limitations. They also cultivate an awareness of their responsibility toward the environment, integrating activities such as sports and mindful movement.
Sila Bhavana: Social Development
Through training in mindfulness of intention, students develop an awareness of “not-harming.” By practicing regularly, they become aware of unwholesome tendencies and work systematically to refine their conduct and mindset.
Citta Bhavana: Emotional Development
Students learn to stay present with their experiences, thoughts, sensations, and emotions with mindfulness (sati). They cultivate emotional stability, allowing the mind to become more peaceful, happy, and content.
Panya Bhavana: Intellectual Development
Students are guided to examine their thoughts, feelings, and perceptions in order to understand their causes and effects. They also learn to cultivate a positive, task-oriented motivation—enjoying the practice itself rather than focusing solely on results.
The 12 Wise Habits serve as a key tool to develop a Buddhist way of life. Developed by Phra Ajahn Jayasaro based on Buddhist principles, the 12 Wise Habits guide our community members towards achieving the Panyaden Profile. Opportunities to practise, develop, and reflect upon these are integrated into the daily life of the school for both students and staff. To help us all work in harmony towards achieving our mission, parents are encouraged to embrace these habits and implement them at home. Attending our assemblies and reading the school newsletters can help families in their partnership towards this goal.
