Scenarios
If coaches do not know how to respond (sample scenarios)
Sometimes the women ask questions that are difficult to answer or mention things that are alarming. Whenever you're not sure how to respond to your mentee, feel free to consult Penny and Honor.
Here are a few problem topics that have emerged in the past with possible replies:
Scenario 1
Personal Questions: Have any of you (meaning WIND coaches) used drugs? Possible answers:
We don't ask our coaches that, so I don't know
The two of us have used anti-depressants to cope with depression, and we found them to be very helpful. We don't know about the other coaches.
I struggled with addiction when I was younger but am happy to say that now drug-free
Scenario 2
Depression/suicidal thoughts: I don't think I can take being locked up any longer. My life looks so grim and sad. Sometimes I think I'd be better off ending it.
Possible response: I'm so sorry that things are so difficult for you right now. Have you told Megan how you feel? We will notify her so she can get you some help.
Additional action: Tell Victoria or Kelly about this comment and they will contact Megan.
Scenario 3
Lack of engagement: I had a hard week and just didn't feel like writing anything. Sorry. (And the worksheet was turned in but is largely blank):
Possible response: I'm sorry this week was challenging for you and that I can't give you any (or much) feedback on your writing. But if you 'd like to do some of these exercises next week, you can send them to me with that homework. I think you'd especially like writing about _____ in Exercise #X because..
Scenario 4
Language/comprehension: Your participant has a serious problem with literacy or ESL or doesn't understand most of the exercises.
Possible response: Write whatever feedback you can, being as encouraging as possible. If you mentee misunderstands an exercise, you can explain it and offer an example. If you think you mentee is struggling with English, we can see about translation for the work.
Scenario 5
Continued Can I keep writing to you after the course ends?
WIND would love to stay in touch. Let me provide the Program Associate's email address to stay in touch and let you know about future courses.
