Do I need a physical? What's the deal with this ImPact Test?
All athletes need a physical and more information can be found here. Runners may also need to take an ImPact Test. This can be done on the computer and the instructions are here. The ImPact Test is part of the school's concussion protocol. Free physicals will be offered.
Do I need special equipment?
The most important thing is a good pair of running shoes. A good pair of running shoes will make you feel comfortable and prevent injury. A running store like Aardvark, Keystone Running Store, Emmaus Run Inn, or Finish Line can pick a specific pair of shoes for you. They will look at the way you run and the shape of your foot then pick something that they think will benefit you. Many competitive high schoolers wear Apple watches and/or special cross country spikes too!
When is practice?
Once fall sports officially start, practice will be mandatory. Mandatory practice will start in mid-August. At that point, we will shift practice to the afternoon and we will meet at our usual spot in front of the high school. Practice starts at 3:30.
What should I bring to practice?
Water. Also, you will wear running appropriate clothing and a watch if you want.
When are meets?
Meets can be any day, but most tend to be on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Students will leave the high school early at around 1:30 and take a bus to the school where the meet is taking place. The high schoolers typically run at 4:00 (sometimes earlier sometimes later). Boys and girls run separate races. The junior high races are typically around 5:00 after the high schoolers have ended. Students can leave the meet with their parents if they get a transportation form signed and approved by the athletic director at least 24 hours before the scheduled meet or they must take the bus back to the high school and get picked up there. Subway can be purchased to eat on the bus ride home. We will also take part in a few Saturday invitationals. These will have many teams and take place in the mornings. Busing is still provided on these days. Appropriate bus etiquette is expected!
