It is a good idea for parents to maintain a file, notebook or binder to keep all of your child’s special education records including IEPs, medical information, evaluations and correspondences.
Come prepared with questions and concerns and input on your child;’s strengths and areas in need of improvement
Try and remain calm; everyone in the room is there to help your child
Express your concerns freely to the Committee
Ask for clarification if there is something you do not understand
Bring someone for support if it makes you feel more comfortable
Clearly state what you agree with and what you disagree with
Keep an open mind to hear what the professionals have to say and ask questions about why recommendations are being made if you do not understand or disagree
Take notes for your future reference
