There are times outside providers request the school district conduct an evaluation on students; for example, to assist the mental health or medical professional with determining a diagnosis. School psychologists can assist providers in gathering information requested by the provider. However, the provider will need to provide the questions, surveys, or forms they would like completed. School psychologists will complete educationally necessary evaluations, as determined by the school based team. Given a request by a provider, the MTSS team may consider whether a referral or other information is needed. Any school-based recommendations outside providers make as a result of this evaluation will be considered by the school district, but not guaranteed.
Outside providers may also request a school district conduct an evaluation of a child to determine the presence of a learning disability; however, this does not mean the district is required to complete such an evaluation. The school psychologist will work with the child’s family and academic team to assess concerns and determine an appropriate course of action.
