Introduction to Music Technology and Industry is a foundational course in creating and recording music and the elements of the entertainment industry. Students develop an understanding of musical concepts, music creation and the technical aspects of audio recording and music production as they create, compose and record their own musical compositions, using various forms of music technology. Students explore the history of recorded sound as a basis for understanding how technological innovation has, and continues to, propel major changes in the way music is created, produced and consumed. They compare current trends in music to musical styles from other historical periods and see that each reflects the social and technological constructs of its time. Music technology and industry combines creative ability with technical skills and how to market these skills through being able to create musical compositions, produce and mix audio recordings, make a business sales pitch and website portfolio of their projects. By the end of this course, students will have acquired the building blocks of both creating musical compositions and how to market the music they have created. More importantly, they will understand and appreciate the power of music to communicate ideas, evoke emotions, and serve as a unifying force for society.
