For Employers

Job Shadows and Career Work Experience

Job shadows and career work experiences (CWEs)  are unpaid experiences where a student's main objective is to learn. These are also an opportunity for a student and employer to determine if they are a good fit for each other before beginning a longer paid work experience or Co-op.  These experiences must qualify for exemption from minimum wage requirements by following the 7 guidelines in the Fair Labor Standards Act for students and interns.  The Career Center's  general liability insurance policy covers students in these settings just as if they are in the school building.  These experiences are scheduled to fall during the school day and schedule whenever possible.

If you think you might like to host a student for a job shadow or CWE, you can call Len Schmidt at 802-382-1071 or email to learn more.

Cooperative Work Experience

(aka Paid Co-op)

Students can work for area businesses during the school day and receive academic credit while earning a paycheck through a paid Co-op.  This program requires a close match between a student's Career Center program of study and the job they will be hired to perform.  The Co-op Coordinator will develop a training plan to insure that the student is learning and demonstrating proficiency in the skills that match both the program curriculum and an employer's needs.  Many Career Center students arrive with both good work ethics and habits, technical skills from their program of study, and training in additional workplace requirements such as safety or confidentiality.  It is very helpful if employers can submit timecards to the Co-op Coordinator regularly for providing a verification of school attendance, but work hours can be scheduled outside of the school day if desired.

Hazards and Minors

Children are our most precious resource, and laws are in place to protect children from workplace hazards.  That said, some hazardous workplace rules have exemptions for students over 16 enrolled in training programs such as PAHCC.  More information is available under Legal on our Links page.
