PSAT
The PSAT is a PRACTICE version of the SAT, which is recommended to students who will be applying to college. Sophomores and juniors are eligible to take the PSAT, which will be given on Wednesday October 30th, 2024. Students register to take the PSAT in the LHS counseling office. PSAT scores are used to give students an idea of areas to improve upon before taking the SAT and only student/parents see PSAT scores, not colleges. Juniors that take the PSAT are automatically entered in the National Merit Scholarship program.
SAT
The SAT is a standardized test widely used for college admissions at 4-year schools in the United States. Please review the websites of colleges you are interested in for more information about required testing. Some colleges have gone to a TEST OPTIONAL format since the beginning of the pandemic.
Luray High School is a test site for the October 5th, 2024 SAT. The deadline for the registration of the October 5th, 2024 SAT is September 20th, 2024. To register for a SAT, go to the College Board website at collegeboard.org. If you have questions about how to register or if you qualify for a fee waiver because you are eligible for federal assistance programs including free lunch, please contact us. Without a fee waiver, you will be expected to make payment by debit/credit card for $55. After the October test, you may need to go to a test site outside of our county for the SAT.
We usually recommend that students take a SAT or ACT (another standardized test used for college admissions but not given in our county) near the end of Junior year and then again in the fall of Senior year. Even if you did not take a test last Spring, you should still have time to take 2 tests if you wish before most college applications are due.
If you are planning to attend Laurel Ridge Community College, an SAT will not be required.
