The Artist Endures: The Narratives on the Walls

Please join us at PAFA for a workshop based on two of our fall exhibitions; Artwork of Endurance, 1979-2018: Three Decades of Print from Permanent Collection & Women in Motion: 150 Years of Women’s Artistic Networks at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in honor of celebrating women artists and acknowledging the importance of diversity in the arts.

The goals of these exhibitions are to inspire a new generation of society to appreciate women artists and discover the inspirations and innovative techniques used in printmaking that artists are using to share narratives around African American, Native American, Latino, and feminist cultures exploring notions of biography conveyed through figurative and abstract representations.

In this workshop, participants are provided the opportunity to enhance their use and knowledge on how to use visual arts narratives to spark observations, draw conclusions, and engage in conversations with their students relating to the topics of race and ethnicity, gender, and diversity in American culture as seen through the lens and narratives of diverse artists. Workshop participants will partake in tours and discussions of these two exhibitions matched with project-based learning activities utilizing Visual Thinking Strategies methods.

Tours and activities will be designed to complement and expand the exhibitions' topics and will offer tools and ideas reflecting participating teachers grade levels and transferable to the classroom setting. Participants will also get to meet some of PAFA’s experts and curatorial staff.

Manhole Covers and Subway Grates: The Art & Process of Sari Dienes

Visit the Philadelphia Art Alliance at University of the Arts for an interactive tour and workshop Visit the Philadelphia Art Alliance at University of the Arts for an interactive tour and workshop centered on the Sari Dienes exhibition, a Hungarian-born American artist well known for her large scale rubbings and prints that had a profound influence on the evolution of mark making within Abstract Expressionism and later Pop Art. Dienes' rubbings originated in New York City, where she’d taken her practice as an abstract artist out of the studio and into the streets. Enlisting colleagues including Jasper Johns and John Cage as assistants, Dienes would lay down paper or cloth atop manhole covers and subway gratings, making direct impressions of the urban fabric with an ink-laden brayer. These textures became elements in sprawling compositions that literally grounded the formal language of Abstract Expressionism. Participants will create artwork that reflects her art making process, and coffee and pastries will be offered.
