Antiracist infographic and How to Guide
Racism is the discrimination or prejudice against a person or a group of people based on the color of their skin or their association with an ethnic group. Usually, racism is aimed at minority groups for the purpose of degrading or dehumanizing the individual or the group in general. We started this class by reading Ibram Kendi’s “Antiracist Baby” which showed us that it is not enough to say racism is wrong but to take actions that prove you are against racism. This should be the aspiration and the goal for changing the culture and becoming an antiracist. The resources that are provided below are not a one size fit all solution but they will provide a guide for what you should do in situations when talking about race with your children. I want to emphasize that these types of interactions are not going to have immediate results but it is about the cumulative effect that we see over the lifetime that matters.
Hey, my name is Zane Staszkow. I'm a Senior at Pacific university majoring in Psychology. I am planning on working with students as a counselor in high school so learning about the many ways that our language can influence kids to have biased or discriminatory views is really important. I think this work is important because it has taught me that children are very perceptive of the things that are being said around them. Children are not born racist, homophobic, or ableist they learn it from their peers and family members.
