Q. What is Cognitive Psychology all about?
A. FALL ’22 COURSE ELABORATION.
We are living in strange and difficult times: political unrest is ongoing, the economy and climate change are disheartening, and dis-information reigns across many media platforms. It can be easy to feel like education is a luxurious, frivolous pastime, with so much wrong in the world. I am here to tell you otherwise though: there is no better time for you to study Cognitive Psychology. Disinformation is a big problem in our society, and we – Cognitive Psychologists – have tools to help combat it. As you learn about the basics of Cognition this semester, you will additionally be learning with a purpose: As your knowledge grows, you will practice using your knowledge to push back against the disinformation machine. Don’t worry – we won’t tackle all the world’s problems at once though (you can take on those after you graduate) – rather, we’ll start small so you can get a sense of the process. Much misinformation about Psychology in general and Cognitive Psychology in particular insidiously takes residence in many folks’ minds. In this class you will learn about some of the most commonly held myths about cognition and we will “bust” them. Following the principles of cognition, we will do our best to “Make the Truth Stick & [some] Myths Fade” (Schwarz, Newman, & Leach, 2016).
