Collider Project 2025

Project Outcomes:

🧠 We hope to guide high school students have a better grasp of what AI literacy is and how they can use AI while knowing its limitations.

🖥️ We will be mythbusting different examples of the good and bad use of A.I. throughout this project.

🧠 We want to raise awareness when it comes to the misunderstandings and the assumptions of A.I. use in academics and in real-world scenarios

🖥️ We will give light to what high schools "think" they know about AI and then explain how and why their opinions need AI-Literacy?

The questions below are from a survey that was offered to 15 AP Psychology students at a high school.

What does this show us?

Students overall are incredibly ill-informed about AI. With the exception of two students, every answer consisted of "I don't know" or "ChatGPT". Out of the 15 responses, only three students stated they do not use AI. All 13 "yes" answers stated they use AI for school assignments. This is a class of AP students, so even some of the more academically advantaged students are incredibly ill-informed about AI.

This shows us that there is a crisis when it comes to the lack of clarity around AI. ChatGPT took the world by storm, but clarity around AI did not follow. The public needs to be informed about what AI is, what it can do, and how it sources information.

"It helps a ton when I need to read a book in under 30 seconds (shout out ChatGPT)"

"Not much I just know it gives you in-depth answers"

"I do not like AI but I still use because it useful. "

Question 4:
"I'd like to see AI progress towards medical and scientific advancements in areas where human capability is lacking. I also think that credibility should go to AI where it was used instead of normalizing its impact. Finally, the influence of AI on my generation, especially ChatGPT, should be reduced and we should have a stronger influence to self advance. "

"The use of AI is terrible in many ways. It can be used maliciously to get personal information from people. It is also being used to remove actual artists from the world and taking away a lot of artists' means of getting paid through people stealing work and claiming it as their own, or using AI to recreate it and claiming it as their own. "

Mission Statement: We, as Psychology scholars, aim to learn and teach aspects of AI that are commonly misconceived and to spread information and awareness about the range of AI's abilities. Specifically, we hope to drive home the idea that AGI isn't real, and that the idea that AI will "take over the world" is more far-fetched than one might think.

About The Authors!

Emily Bishop

My name is Emily Bishop, and I am a freshman at Pacific University. I am majoring in Psychology and will eventually pursue a career in neuropsychology working in a research lab. The pursuit of truth is something I value in life, and through this project we have provided the general public-especially young adults- the opportunity to be well informed about an ever changing and complex topic. My goal in life is to be a life long learner, and within my research forever an educator.

Maggie Zaverl

My name is Maggie Zaverl, I am a junior Psychology major and Biology minor at Pacific University. My goal for my undergraduate education is to move on to optometry school. Being in an age between adolescence and adulthood, I can both remember what life was like without the integration of AI and also envision a future where it is continuing to grow. My goal for this project is to help those stepping into my age group have a full and informed understanding of AI.

Chelsea Burns

My name is Chelsea Burns, I am a major in Psychology, and studying for my CSD minor (communication sciences and disorders). I plan to attend the graduate program for speech pathology. While presenting and working on this project, it is important to me that we reach our goal to inform others. My knowledge about AI has been expanded. After learning it all throughout the semester, I believe AI can be used in good ways more than bad.

Fiona Joneschild My name is Fiona Joneschild, and I am majoring in Psychology at Pacific University. I plan to attend a doctoral program in clinical psychology after I graduate from undergrad here in Oregon. My goal in this lifetime is to help those who are in need of mental well-being support. While working on this project throughout the course of the semester, it has been really interesting learning about how human intelligence and artificial intelligence have similarities and differences. I wasn’t as interested in AI use, but now this class has sparked my interest in seeing how it evolves throughout the course of our generation.
