The Butterfly Project is a San Diego-founded project which is inspired by the poem "The Butterfly." This poem was written by a child who lived during the Holocaust; it tells the story of life in the ghetto. The Butterfly Project's goal is to create 1.6 million butterflies to honor all the children who died in the Holocaust. When students paint butterflies, they are given a card with the name of one of the children who died in the Holocaust. Students then paint the butterfly in honor of that child. After all the butterflies are painted, we will create a permanent display of the butterflies in the Middle School Reading Room.
