In the year 1999-2000, the (BYU) Women’s Cougar Rugby Club was introduced to Brigham Young University. In that short time, the club has grown in experience, numbers, and reputation. In this past two decades (2000 - 2020), we have fought to the top seat in our state of Utah, and we are highly ranked in the Nation as evident in the team winning the 2019 USA Rugby Women's D1 College Spring Championship Title. BYU Women's Rugby became an official Extramural Sport on Thursday, October 8, 2015. The camaraderie of this team offers a great support system for its players spiritually, mentally, and physically. Hopefully our new association will allow more BYU girls the opportunity to become part of this growing sport.

“Women’s rugby at BYU began in February 2000, when Julia Hobbs, 19, a sophomore from Norman, OK, put up fliers on campus, asking girls interested in playing to call her.” “Over 100 girls called,” Hobbs said. Many have since dropped out or gone home for the summer — only 12 girls remain.” By Emily Bell – NewsNet Staff Writer – 31 May 2000. Women’s Cougars rugby tradition lived on; from those 12 dedicated girls, to a highly ranked team in the Nation today. With an average roster of about 40 girls, sometimes more, every Winter/Spring and Fall semester, and a dedicated coaching staff, it is highly unlikely that the sacrifice made by the founders of women’s rugby at BYU will ever fade away. This is indeed a living legacy.

The Grand Canyon University Women’s Rugby team offers a competitive program that reached several new heights over the past few years. The GCU Women’s Rugby team has lost just three regular season matches combined throughout the 2017-2020 seasons. . Furthermore, they reached the conference championship match twice, winning the Gold Coast Conference Intercollegiate Rugby Championship in 2018, leading to a berth in the national tournament. The Lopes were in line to reach the postseason yet again in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic shortened their season. The 2020-21 regular season was reduced to just a few contests due to COVID-19, but the Lopes are excited to put their skills back to the test for the 2021-22 season.

GCU Women’s Rugby not only prepares student-athletes for their future – on and off – the field, but gives them a chance to compete for regional and national championships. The program goal is to cultivate an environment of camaraderie, hard work, fun, perseverance, teamwork, accountability and sportsmanship.

The GCU Women’s Rugby team is built around the core values of passion, commitment, determination and love of a great sport. The coaching staff firmly believes that the lessons they learned from rugby built a foundation for growth throughout their personal and professional lives. This is what drives them to create an environment for GCU athletes to experience, learn from rugby and cultivate success and high performance on and off the field.

The University of Arizona Women's Rugby Football Club was founded in the fall of 1997. The team began as part of the Southern California Rugby Union and became the SoCal Division II Champions for the first time in the spring of 2007. They have played in the USA Rugby National Tournament, where they were ranked fifth in 2007 and again in 2009.

As a club sport on campus, we do receive monetary support from the university; however, we are primarily financially independent. As such, we appreciate any and all support from the local Tucson community and elsewhere. We hold various fundraisers throughout the year to support our travel, tournament fees, and home matches.

Our team is always growing and accepting new members. If you have any questions about joining or checking out a practice, please let us know! No experience is necessary; just a desire to learn how to play an amazing and addicting sport!

UCLA Women's Rugby

It all began in 1975 when several inspired, athletic UCLA students decided to found a women's rugby club. Following the lead of the national champion UCLA men's rugby club, the young team worked hard and soon earned a berth in the National USA Championships. The Bruins captured third place in their first appearance and earned the respect of the predominantly East Coast participants. Thus began the great tradition of women's rugby at UCLA. By the next few decades, the UCLA Women's rugby team had established itself as one of the predominant clubs in the Southern California Women's Rugby League. Beginning in 2005, a collegiate side of the UCLA Women's Rugby team formed and the club began competing in the collegiate division of the Southern California Women's Rugby Union.

Information for Prospective Players: We look for girls that have a love for rugby like we do. Go hard or go home! The Bruin Rangers accepts all interested students, of all skill and fitness levels, with or without rugby experience. Any students interested in playing need only come out to practice and join in. No experience necessary. We have lots of people on the squad and everyone gets to play.

Why should I join? Rugby players are a unique breed and an excellent group of friends. The team is filled with players of all ages, majors, and backgrounds, offering you a diverse team that's not found in every student group. As a rookie, you will be matched up with a returning player - your "vet" - who is dedicated to acting as your "big sister" away from home. She will look out for you, answer your questions, and help make your experience with UCLA Women's Rugby as enjoyable as possible. Additionally, rugby culture is very unique in it's sportsmanship and respect for other ruggers. Rugby is known as a "hooligan's sport played by gentlemen." While both teams play aggressively during the game, once the whistle is blown there are no hard feelings between players, and both teams socialize together before parting ways. This creates a very positive and accepting environment for all ruggers.

UCSD Women's Rugby is part of a growing tradition of women's collegiate rugby in America, and especially in Southern California. The team's SoCal league has become progressively more competitive over the years, thanks to a growing interest in women's rugby. UCSD Women's Rugby has a history of excelling in their league, making it to nationals several times and doing well with the tough competition. UCSD Women's Rugby is known for our yearly tournament called Scrum By the Sea, that happens every November, and includes teams from all over California and Arizona. UCSD Women's Rugby also annually travels to Stanford and Arizona for tournaments and regular league play.

Officially recognized as a club in 2011, the CSUN Women's Rugby Club has only grown since its humble beginnings. From starting and competing at the Division 2 level to making playoff runs at the Division 1 level, our goal is and always will be to empower women with the skills, discipline, and teamwork developed by playing the sport of Rugby. We encourage all, regardless of experience, to come out and play.
