Dear English Language Learner Parents and Students,
Designated ELD (D-ELD) refers to instruction explicitly designed for English language learners to develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. It is a legal requirement that EL students have access to the same grade level standards and rigorous content as their English-only peers. Instruction in English should be partnered with instructional strategies and scaffolding to increase and maximize content mastery. It is expected that students will reach mastery within 5 years of entering the ELD program.
PCA provides ELD students with live virtual classes and a parent-led option to support students with their D-ELD lessons each week. Below is the curriculum provided by PCA and a breakdown for students to follow in order to meet their weekly goal of completing 150 minutes of D-ELD instruction each Learning Period.
ELD Curriculum
K-12 - live virtual classes 2x a week (Learning Period 2 - 8)
K-5 - Lexia Core5 online ELD instruction + ELPAC reading and writing practice workbooks (required)
6-12 - Lexia PowerUp online ELD instruction (required)
6-12 - live virtual class students receive Essentials in Writing workbooks
IMPORTANT: Work Sample Change
Instead of monthly ELD logs, students will submit an ELD work sample each learning period.
K-12 students in the live virtual course submit a sample from their assigned coursework.
K - 8 students choosing the parent-led option submit a sample from their ELPAC practice workbooks.
9-12 students choosing the parent-led option submit a writing sample assigned by their HST.
Lexia Online Learning Platform
All ELD students should have received their login information to their Lexia online learning platform. We have chosen Lexia Core5 as the designated ELD instruction for TK-5 students and Lexia PowerUp for grades 6-12. I've included additional detailed information your student will need to meet the weekly 150 minutes of ELD instruction listed below.
K-8 students taking live virtual classes are required to complete approximately 90 minutes of ELD instruction per week in Lexia & ELPAC Practice Workbooks or Lexia Lessons as assigned by your HST. This can include both offline and online Lexia work. HSTs should be providing offline Lexia work as needed.
K-8 students choosing the parent-led option are required to complete approximately 150 minutes of ELD instruction per week in Lexia & ELPAC Practice Workbooks or Lexia Lessons as assigned by your HST. This can include both offline and online Lexia work. HSTs should be providing offline Lexia work as needed.

This can include both offline and online Lexia work. HSTs should be providing offline Lexia work as needed.

Flashlight 360
Students in grades K-12 will complete Flashlight assignments each learning period. This assignment includes both Speaking and Writing to a prompt. K-2 students will receive an offline PDF, while 3-12 grade students will login to Flashlight via Clever.
We hope that streamlining the ELD support options this year gives students a more systematic and structured approach to meeting their needs. For more information, visit our multilingual resource site.
