Hello! My name is Ms. Rochford and this coming year I will be your science teacher. I am looking forward to meeting you and learning more about you. I have been teaching since 1999 and I am a graduate of Canadian University College (now Burman University) in Lacombe, Alberta. I received a Bachelor of Education degree in Junior High Education and have taught grades 7 & 8 in different schools through most of my teaching career. Since I started teaching online over ten years ago, I have really enjoyed working with all the different tools for schools that Google has and so in 2019 I took my tests to become a Google Certified Educator and then in 2020 I was accepted into the Google Trainer program. So be prepared to have a very Googley school year. :)
Science 7 is not so much about memorizing definitions or labelling diagrams or remembering processes. It is about finding God’s fingerprints in the world that He has made. It is about entering an attitude of curiosity and exploration. It is meant to help you develop skills to propose ideas and then develop experiments to test them.
Through studying science, we realize how much there still is to wonder about and understand in the complexity of this world. We have been given the responsibility and privilege to be God’s caretakers for the Earth. We will learn how our everyday actions affect the world around us, and how we can make choices that will help to sustain the world for the next generation.
As much as possible, you will be actively involved in your learning through labs and hands-on projects. You will not just be learning concepts, but will also be using critical thinking skills to solve problems and interpret data.
This course is designed as an interactive learning class. This means that we have dedicated time online to learn and discuss this material. Outside of class, you are responsible for going over the resources provided for you and completing the tasks outlined. You will be required to have discipline and motivation in order to complete each task.
This year we will be focusing on 5 major topics:
Plants for Food and Fibre
Heat and Temperature
Structures and Forces
Interactions and Ecosystems
Planet Earth
Each of these topics are further divided into smaller topics that will span the course of this year.
