Abigail Quic

Abby is a young indigenous T’zutujil woman from the shores of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. Abby is a strong believer in the power of community and cultural knowledge to foster sustainable and fulfilling lives. In 2011, Abby participated in a YLTW congress in Guatemala, with OzGREEN’s partners SERES. Although Abby had never put herself forward as a leader when she was younger, Abby was part of a small team that came to Australia and participated in a five-week climate change resilience leadership program run by OzGREEN and SERES.

During this program, Abby trained as a YLTW facilitator. In the first two years after receiving her training, she facilitated 11 YLTW congresses in four different languages throughout Guatemala. In 2015, Abby accepted the UNESCO Education for Sustainable Development Prize on behalf of SERES and in 2017 Abby did a three-month internship with OzGREEN in Australia, helping to plan YLTW 2018. As a part of the SERES team she has gone on to inspire hundreds of young people through her determination and example.

Jaden

Jaden was a high school student in Sydney who was really concerned about climate change but felt that nobody else in his school really cared. Jaden attended a Youth Leading the World congress when he was only 14. Here Jaden discovered that there were like minded young people who shared his concerns and his passions. With some of these young people, he co-founded and coordinated the Sydney Youth Climate Action Network (SYCAN). SYCAN started with about 30 members and quickly grew to well over 600 student members across Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. They have led many successful environmental initiatives including Greenfeat, an environmentally themed Youth Week and also a Green Flash Mob event which helped to raise awareness about people’s ecological footprints.

Jaden went on to become an active volunteer in the Australian Youth Climate Coalition as the NSW Campaigns Manager and is now a key member of OzGREEN’s Board of Directors, helping to expand the reach of our youth programs. In 2015, Jaden won the ACT/NSW Young Achiever of the Year award for his efforts in environment and sustainability.
