Education is for any HPP or HH member who wants to increase their knowledge about horses. There are four types of competitions: quiz bowl, hippology, team problems, and judging.
Quiz Bowl: In teams of 3-4, members compete against other teams one at a time. Using buzzers, team members answer individual questions during the round. The team also has a chance to answer problems as a team.
Hippology: Think of a posterboard with about 10 images and you have a good idea of what hippology is like. Depending on the member's age, they complete a series of posterboards and match the image with the correct name. Posterboard topics can include, but are not limited to: breeds, colors, markings, equipment, farrier tools, saddle parts, parts of the horse, etc. This is an individual event.
Team Problems: Members compete in teams of 3-4 to answer two questions. For the prepared problem, team members are given the problem and have 20 minutes to prepare their answer before verbally giving their answer, as a team, to the judge. For the impromptu problem, team members are given the problem and have five minutes to prepare their answer before verbally giving their answer, as a team, to the judge. Teams are judged based on the accuracy and depth of their answer as well as their ability to deliver the answers as a team.
Judging: Members compete individually, but their individual scores are combined into a team score of 3-4 members. In this event, participants judge classes of four horses. To gain the highest number of points, participants must rank the horses first through fourth based on conformation and breed characteristics. Members also have the opportunity to defend their answers through oral reasons.
