In January, multilingual learners in grades K-3 have been receiving support in their ENL (English as a New Language) classes, where they focus on improving their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. During this time, students have been expanding their vocabulary by learning about classroom objects, and practicing the use of sight words, verbs, and adjectives to form simple sentences. This helps them build a stronger foundation in English while gaining confidence in expressing themselves both verbally and in writing.
Kindergarten
In Kindergarten students are finishing up their Unit on what they know about school. For this activity students were asked to identify various classroom objects that they were able to find and identify in school. Students had a conversation about the classroom objects. Students learned to listen to a question and respond with the appropriate answer.

First Grade
First-grade ENL students are focusing on improving their speaking, listening, and writing skills. They are learning to write full sentences using the tapping-out method, where they tap out sounds to spell words related to objects. When speaking, students can describe one or more objects by using sight words and colors such as "the," "is," "are," "they," "these," and "this." In addition, they practice listening to the sounds of letters to help them correctly write them. This approach helps students build confidence in both their oral and written communication.

In this lesson, second graders are learning to identify and name five classroom objects by looking at pictures. They practice asking questions like "What is this?" and responding with "This is a ___" or "These are ___." Students also engage in using school-related language to ask for items in the classroom or offer objects to others. The focus is on developing both speaking and writing skills, with an emphasis on recognizing the sounds of words to support correct spelling and sentence formation. This helps students build confidence in using everyday classroom language in both oral and written communication.

In third grade, English language learners (ELLs) are using prepositions to describe numerical items by asking questions and communicating with others. They practice listening skills by recognizing numbers and understanding related demands. Students learn to read numerical values and write sentences using these numbers, allowing them to focus on improving their English language skills. This activity helps reinforce both their comprehension of prepositions and their ability to use numbers in everyday conversations, while also enhancing their reading and writing abilities.
