February 2025
Thinker
This month, first graders are practicing being thinkers as they learn about the different learner profile attributes and decide which attribute best describes who they are as learners.
Causation and Function
This month, first graders are focusing on the concepts of causation and function. We are asking ourselves "Why is it as it is?" and "How does it work?" This helps us learn more about the structures and patterns we see in the world
Social and Communication
This month, students are using social and communication skills to learn more about how the world works. They are speaking to each other about their ideas and working together in groups. This helps them problem-solve and support their classmates.
In February, students planted marigold seeds and observed them as they grew. They acted like scientists to draw pictures and write sentences to keep track of the changes they saw. Students used what they learned about the needs of plants to be sure their plants were in a sunny location and that they received plenty of water. Students were able to take their plants home to continue to watch them grow!
This month, students thought deeply about the attributes of the Learner Profile. They listened to read-alouds that depicted each one and then came up with examples of how they could personify that attribute in class. Students then each chose one attribute that best describes them as a learner. But remember...we are always learning and growing and pushing ourselves to be a more complete and well-rounded learner.
February was a busy month for First Grade! We also celebrated the 100th day of school, Black History Month, and had our first field trip! We went to the Brooklyn Transit Museum. For Black History Month it was important that we learned about important black leaders and learned about why they made these changes in society. Students were able to look at the causation and how these leaders made a change in the world.
Check back in March for pictures from our trip!
