MindQuest was envisioned by Creative Active Lives CIC as a welcoming, calming Minecraft world where children would feel comfortable and relaxed filling out a wellbeing survey.
Not everyone feels relaxed and comfortable in the same circumstances, so Rachel and I planned and designed five separate themed environments children could choose from (Springland, Summerland, Autumnland, Winterland and Cloudland). Everyone is welcomed to the experience in a Kew Gardens inspired Greenhouse, filled with flora and fauna. Each area has it's own set of custom assets including NPCs, food, vehicles, and animals themed to the area they are located in.
We both felt that there was an opportunity to include some Minecraft fun after the survey was completed. Each of these six themed areas, are open for exploration in either survival or creative mode, for use as a build plate, or just a relaxing place to hang out and go gardening, farming, fishing, flying, or a wee drive. As an added extra, there are "easter eggs" hidden away in each area, waiting to be discovered!
MindQuest has been one of my favourite projects from a creative perspective with our mission to make fun, visually engaging assets and landscapes in a calming, welcoming space.
Each area has it's own unique vehicle, so it made sense that the Flash Gordon inspired Cloudland, would have a retro-futuristic airship you could fly amongst the clouds.
No English countryside is complete without badgers! In MindQuest, you'll see them frolicking around as opposed to real life where you most likely to see them "resting" at the side of the road.
It's made a few appearances in several worlds... here it is again just slightly redesigned with a 1930s aesthetic. I've added fenders, a chain guard and modified the handlebars.
As a kid, I absolutely loved old-fashioned cars, and had a reasonable collection of Matchbox and Hotwheels examples. Primarily inspired by Rolls-Royce's "Silver Ghost", this sedan has more than a few other features inspired from other vehicles of that era. There's room for a driver and a passenger.
"You can have it in any colour you like, as long as it's black." Unlike Ford, I wanted to create a classic vehicle with at least a couple of colour variations. It's a lot of fun to drive around Autumnland. Vehicles of any kind are probably my favourite custom asset to create due to the creative flexibility and the detailing you can build into them.
Most boat styles can be particularly challenging to create in Blockbench. However, "clinker" style hulls such as with the rowboat above, while time consuming, are actually fairly easy to create once you figure out the best way of putting them together.
I created five colourful variations of butterflies to fly around and add an element of magic and serentity. If you get close enough, you'll notice that they are happy little butterflies.
Not just a cat, but The House Cat, he wears a wee hat and bow-tie, and tells silly jokes. He's modelled on my old cat, Reggie.
They are the cutest of the squirrels in my opinion, and you'll find them in all the areas except Cloudland and Winterland. It's my second favourite red squirrel, just behind "Conker" from the classic Nintendo game "Conker's Bad Fur Day".
Many of my Minecraft animals are very detail driven, and this British Robin is no exception. It really came to life when I added the feathers.
The Red Maple above is one of the slightly more detailed trees that can be found in various locations in MindQuest. You'll also find other detailed custom plant life including: Birch trees, Cedar Trees, Spruce Trees, Bushes, and Bulrushes.
This was an enjoyable asset to create that came together pretty quickly. The reindeer was borrowed from my Holiday Activity world, now with a rideable sleigh, although you can find small herds of the standalone reindeer wandering around winterland too. There's seating for a driver and a passenger.
The Cloudlanders are generally inspired by Flash Gordon, and that style of fantastical and rather silly costumes.
Despite the imposing robes, Cloudlanders are a friendly and welcoming bunch, offering a range of refreshments.
Inspired by the famous classic Nintendo character Link and Legolas from Lord of the Rings.
A female variation of the classically inspired Link, and Legolas.
A female, Summerland farmer. She'll give you some ideas on how you can relax in Summerland, and you can borrow her bicycle to explore the fields, cottages, barns, and other structures.
Our male, Summerland farmer will provide you with some refreshments and the opportunity to take his rowboat to do some fishing.
This gardner and his female co-worker welcome you to the MindQuest experience. As I was putting him together, he struck me as looking a bit like, "Ned Flanders", so I leaned into that inspiration a bit.
I enjoy making hats in for NPCs in Blockbench. Sometimes the cube aesthetic just doesn't work entirely on it's own, and I'll merge it with some circular features to complete the feeling I'm looking for. Dungarees are also a kind of attire I love designing and texturing.
Various model elements from previous winter attire I've designed went into this Winterlander NPC model. I used the opportunity to fix and improve some of the design elements I wasn't entirely happy with.
You can probably guess the inspiration for this character. When my daughter was younger, we watched "Frozen"... a lot.
Autumnland is meant to feel like the the 1930s, so it was a great opportunity to explore male and female attire and hairstyles from that era.
Although not intentional, this Autumnlander reminds me of "Scully" from the "X-Files".
