Your lights use electricity and to create electricity humans burn fossil fuels. There are different ways to create electricity but they are more expensive than burning fossil fuels. Burning fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases into the air (such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur oxide). Therefore, turning off your lights helps the environment.
When people burn forests they are releasing carbon dioxide into the air. Trees hold absorb methane into their trunks and then don't release it as carbon dioxide. When humans burn trees the trunks are burned to ashes allowing the methane to be released into the air. Buying palm oil will make people burn more forests releasing palm oil into the air. Therefore not buying palm oil will help the environment.
Though many people do not know it, taking long showers can use a lot a electricity. When people take showers they use heated water, and to heat the water they must use electricity. To avoid this expense, it would be unreasonable to not take showers at all, or to take cold showers. So instead people can lower their carbon footprint by limiting the amount of time they spend in the shower. They can do this by using shampoo and soap immediately, and not wasting time in between.
If you didn't already know, cows produce methane through their burbs, which is harmful to the environment. Methane is a one of the largest greenhouse gas polluters. After entering the atmosphere, the methane traps heat from the sun inside and warms the earth. The reason that cows are now polluting more than before is because they are being raised beef and dairy products. Two ways in which people at home can help prevent cows from polluting are by buying less milk and butter, and by substituting chicken for beef. Yes, chickens do produce carbon dioxide which is also a greenhouse gas. However, carbon dioxide does not pollute the atmosphere nearly as much as the methane cows produce.
