Water bottles are being provided for all OUSD middle & high school students in August 2021, to support access to drinking water and use of reusable water bottles. Water stations have also been installed at all OUSD school sites!

Students partnered with OUSD Health & Wellness staff to identify water access and consumption as a student priority. This is based on the understanding that students deserve to be healthy & hydrated, to be ready to learn and thrive.
During the 2019 - 2020 school year (before COVID-19 school closures), student leaders got together to design a student art contest with the theme of "WATER IS LIFE."
Over 120 students from 13 OUSD middle & high schools submitted designs based on the theme “Water Is Life” to inspire their peers to value water, drink water & use reusable water bottles.
A panel of student narrowed down the top 9 designs
Over 450 middle & high students voted, selecting the top 3 designs!
This project was led by the OUSD Health & Wellness team and All City Council Student Union student leaders, in partnership with ALL IN Alameda County, HOPE Collaborative, OUSD Restorative Justice, and other partners.
Many thanks for the funding for water bottles, from Kaiser Permanente, All In Alameda County, Supervisor Wilma Chan’s Office, and individual donors, via partnership with OUSD Health and Wellness Unit.
Artist Statement:
"This design is inspired by the terms “water”, “life”, and “Oakland”. I want to create something that is unique to this beautiful city that I live in, thus I incorporated the Oakland Tree within the illustration as a symbol of both “Oakland” and “Life”. The background is a blurry painting of Lake Merritt, the first imagery that appears in my head whenever word “water” is mentioned. Through this design, I want to encourage more of my peers to start drinking water to prevent dehydration, and to be healthier (as it replaces soft drinks).
This design can be visually interpreted in two ways: 1) The water of Oakland flowing into a reusable water bottle, like water from the Flowater machines flowing into a reusable water bottle. This is to encourage students to utilize these machines to their advantage and refrain from using plastic water bottles; 2) The Oakland tree growing out of the bottle. By using less plastic water bottles, students contribute to saving the environment, saving the Oak trees (life). And by drinking more water, students will also become healthier (life). "
Artist Statement:
"Water keeps us happy, healthy, and active. Water is really and wholeheartedly life, and I wanted to express that by showing that even with something that’s as small as a water bottle, it contains something that sustains the blue and green of our earth; animals, and nature, and humanity. Water hydrates all. No matter how alike or unalike, we all share one common thing, and that is the beautiful source of life."
Each middle and high school site is receiving enough bottles and stickers for 1 bottle and 2 stickers per student. You can distribute the bottles and stickers at the start of the school year, or at a time that works best for your site.
The 25 ounce stainless steel bottles with screw top caps are BPA-free. We recommend students write their names on the bottles and use the stickers to customize them. It is recommended bottles be washed 1-2 times per week with warm water and dish soap.
This is a great opportunity to incorporate the health and environmental benefits of drinking water and using reusable water bottles into water bottle and sticker distribution and use.

Alameda County Public Health Department’s Nutrition Services Program partnered with East Oakland resident photographer Britt Sense to capture these beautiful images of community residents drinking water for the 8 week Water is Life messaging campaign. Many images were featured on billboards along the E14th St corridor. Images are in this folder and available for respectful use for the community.
