SEL & Expanded Learning

SEL is a foundational component in Oakland's after-school programs, and essential for our young people's success in school and beyond. The SEL 3 Signature Practices are interwoven into a young person's daily after-school learning experience. The SEL and Expanded Learning Teams have partnered for the past six years to support schools where school day and after-school staff are authentic partners around their shared goals for SEL and in building equitable learning environments to support young people's social, emotional, and academic success.

Creating a Climate and Culture of Safety, Inclusion, and Belonging

The SEL 3 Signature Practices (Welcoming/Inclusion Activities, Engaging Strategies, Optimistic Closure) is a tool for nurturing a supportive environment and promoting SEL. They intentionally and explicitly help build a habit of practices through which students and adults enhance their SEL skills. When used authentically and intentionally, the SEL 3 Signature Practices can help to create safe, equity-centered, productive learning and working spaces for students and adults. To learn more about the SEL 3 Signature Practices, watch this 5-minute video. The SEL 3 Signature Practices Playbook provides practical ways to introduce and broaden the use of SEL practices in the classroom and workplace.

"Address the roots and bloom the fruits"

Our young people have returned to school after over a year of remarkable challenges and disruptions. How can we welcome and engage our diverse students in ways that nurture community, build caring relationships, and support young people’s social and emotional needs and development?

Hosted by OUSD's Offices of Expanded Learning and SEL, the presenters shared how their resources: 1) use a trauma-informed practice lens in the after-school setting; 2) address several ways to engage students from diverse backgrounds; and, 3) support teachers to address critical social issues in the classroom. All resources incorporate SEL and a service-learning approach.
