All Certificated Teacher and Administrator positions require APPROPRIATE CURRENT certification with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).
The first step your Employee Support Specialist takes upon receiving the request to begin your hire is to check for your certifications on the CTC website.
If you have a CA certification in good standing and appropriate to your position, your hire will proceed without any further communication about your credential.
If you lack current appropriate certification with CTC for your position, we will perform a further analysis to identify the appropriate next steps to qualify you for the position. We will reach out with specific information and instructions.
If you have been hired for a teaching position and don't yet have a credential, you will apply with our assistance for an emergency permit that will attest to the CTC that you have basic qualifications for entering a classroom and will pursue the necessary measures to qualify for and enter an accredited Credential program within your first year.
The steps toward becoming fully credentialed are:
1st year - Emergency permit (which we help you apply for). By end of year, conditions of permit have been met (e.g. pass CBEST, apply for and accepted into credential program)
2nd year - Intern credential under auspices of Credential program (this credential is good as long as you are a student in good standing with your program)
As a new teacher without a credential, your first job during your first year is to move quickly toward completing your acceptance into a program.
You will be working closely with our New Teacher Support Program who will reach out to you to help you set goals and identify your workstream toward your credential. You don't have to reach out to NTSP now, they will be in touch after your hire.
Your credential needs to be a CALIFORNIA credential. It also may not be expired, suspended or revoked.
Federal and State law is specific and exacting with regard to the qualifications required of certificated staff serving the educational needs to students. Our job is to ensure you are technically qualified to step into the role we have hired you for. If we identify a mismatch between your qualifications and the requirement for your new position we will seek ways to help you apply for additional certification.
Roles - OUSD certificated roles include not just Teachers but also Nurses, Social Workers, Counselors, Administrators, Psychologists, and Librarians. Each of these roles has a specific required credential.
Grade level - Multiple subject credentials work for elementary-age children but will not furnish sufficient subject matter depth to allow teaching at middle and high school level. If our analysis revealed a mismatch, we would supplement by helping you apply for additional emergency certification based on your college work subject matter.
Subject
Single subject credentials might not be in the exact subject area of the new position (e.g. Math credential hired into a Science teacher position). We would supplement mismatches by helping you apply for additional emergency certification base on your college work subject matter.
Special Needs education requires certifications additional to regular Multiple or single subjects. We would supplement your regular credential by helping you apply for additional emergency
Because different states all have different standards for achieving credentials, it is necessary to complete an analysis of your present credential to be certain it was obtained with work and tests that meet CTC standards. We will reach out to help you submit an application with the CTC for a transfer of your certification from your home state to California.
We will help you apply for an emergency permit to allow you to teach for this first year while you enroll in a credential program and move toward your Intern Credential. You will work with the New Teacher Support Program during your first year to be certain you fulfil the requirements of your emergency permit
Our analysis will identify any mismatch between your credential type and your new assignment. We will reach out to you with instructions on how to apply for a waiver or emergency permit with the CTC to allow you to teach in the new assignment.
