Election Guidelines

Academic Guidelines

  1. Candidates may not have any “D” or “F” grades in the current school year and must be able to demonstrate the ability to manage their academic load and the demands on Student Council officers.

  2. All candidates must maintain a 2.5 G.P.A. to run for office and remain on Student Council. If you fail to meet the 2.5 G.P.A. requirements, you cannot run for office.


Speech Requirements

  1. Speeches are limited to two minutes (no more than 250 words). The speeches should include the following: Individual qualifications, experience for the office, academic goals for improving Montera, ideas for promoting school spirit and ideas for creating and maintaining a positive school climate.

  2. You may not speak about other candidates in a negative manner. Any candidates making negative comments about another candidate will be removed from the campaign.

  3. Videotaped speeches must be submitted to Mx. J by Friday, September 30.

  4. All students will watch the speeches and vote for Student Body Government positions on Tuesday, October 4th. Results will be announced on Friday, October 7.


Bootcamp Requirement

All students applying for student council positions must attend a two day Leadership Bootcamp (Tuesday, September 20th and Thursday, September 22nd) during 7th/8th grade advisory/6th grade lunch. Failure to attend the Bootcamp may result in disqualification.



Campaign Guidelines

  1. Campaign posters can be posted as of Wednesday, September 21.

  2. You can post up to 10 campaign posters. No poster should exceed the size of 18 x 12 inches. No profane or negative statements on posters

  3. You may not post your campaign materials on top of another student’s poster. You can not deface, destroy, or alter another candidate’s campaign posters or other campaign materials.

  4. You must pick-up and take down all campaign materials by the end of the day on Wednesday, October 5.

  5. You can wear special attire on the day of the speech such as hats, buttons, campaign colors, school colors, etc.

  6. No candy or food as give away items for voting incentives. You can pass out flyers, buttons and/or stickers.


Advisory Election Guidelines

  1. For advisory candidates, applications must be submitted to both Mx. J and to your advisory teacher.

  2. Advisory classes decide how representatives are selected (through nomination or vote).

  3. The names of the selected Advisory Delegates are due to Mx. J by Thursday, October 6th.
