About this Topic

This topic is ideal for the beginning of the year, in order to establish norms around computer care and logging in.  Most 4th graders will already know how to log into computers using email and password, but teachers can optionally use Lesson 2 (How to Log Into Your Computer) to review.

  • Lesson 1: How to Take Care of Your Computer

  • Lesson 2: (Optional) How to Log Into Your Computer

Recommendation - Distributing Computers

The proven best practice is to assign a computer to each student, instead of letting students take computers randomly. This practice improves accountability and makes it much easier to troubleshoot technical issues.

Which Type of Login Should My Class Use?

When considering how your students will log into their Chromebooks, you have two options:

  1. Email/Password Login (Recommended for 3rd grade and up) - Students manually enter their email address and password.

  2. Clever Badge Login - Students hold up their own  “badge” in front of the Chromebook, and they are automatically logged into their Chromebooks.

Email/Password Login takes some practice for students to learn, but this method empowers to log into their accounts from any device.

Clever Badge Login is an easier and faster method, especially for younger students. However, Clever badge login does not always work on home computers, so students might be unable to access their OUSD accounts at home if they don’t know their login information.

If you would like to use Clever Badge Login, and it does not appear to be an option on your classroom devices, contact the tech lead at your school. Clever Badge login must be enabled for the entire school.  Clever Badge login can be bypassed so that students can use Email/Password Login.
