First Steps

• If you have Renter's Insurance, report the fire to your insurance agent and ask for a complete copy of your policy that was effective the date of the fire.

• The essence of your policy is shown on the declarations page and shows the limits for each bucket of coverage you have. 

• Obtain the contact information for your adjuster (there may be a few). 

• Notify your landlord and work with them to get access to your contents and your security deposit and pro-rated rent returned. 

• Take a deep breath, this will be a process and take some time. Don't rush into making any decisions
