About (smart) learning environments
"Focus on the digital technologies that mediate (parts of) our learning environments highlights a crucial point that all learning environments are a combination of people and technologies (including structures, rules, methods, tools, machines, mechanisms and so on). Some of those technologies are physical, some virtual, but many of them – from design principles and teaching methods to the application of Roberts Rules in meetings - are partially or wholly enacted by and contained within people.
Educational environments are designed, whether by independent, cooperating, or collaborating architects. They are, in essence, technologies for (at least) learning, and they consist of a vast number of parts, many of which are technologies in themselves. Understanding the nature of technologies is therefore central to properly understanding these environments."

Scaffolding in the learning environment
Changes have also occurred in the role of the scaffolder. Instead of a single, knowledgeable person providing support, we now have tools and resources, peers, or the learning environment itself providing support to students.

DIgital learning lab KTK149 is our learning space in the context of this course. Main online platforms are Microsoft O365 for Education and Google Suite for Learning which both are GDPR sertified by our ICT administration.

Definition of Personal learning environment
“A PLE is characterized by the freeform use of a set of lightweight services and tools that belong to and are controlled by individual learners. Rather than integrating different services into a centralized system, the idea is to provide the learner with a myriad of services and hand over control to her to select and use the services the way she deems fit. A PLE driven approach does not only provide personal spaces, which belong to and are controlled by the user, but also requires a social context by offering means to connect with other personal spaces for effective knowledge sharing and collaborative knowledge creation.” (Mohamed A. How use of PLEs can promote self-regulation and autonomous learning?
Dabbagh & Kitsantas (2012) propose a loose framework to introduce the use of PLEs in a way that promotes self-regulation and autonomous learning in ways that are transferable between formal and informal learning contexts. Based on Zimmerman's (2000) cyclical three stage self-regulation model (forethought > performance and volition control > self-reflection) they present an instructional design framework that introduces the use of PLEs in three corresponding phases and proposes a sampling of web 2.0 technologies ( blogs, wikis, shared calendars, media sharing, social networking and social bookmarking) and examples of their use in each phase. Three levels :
Level 1: Personal information management corresponds to the forethought phase where planning, goal-setting and information gathering can be conducted and recorded.Level 2: Social interaction and collaboration corresponds to the performance phase where sharing and pooling of and peer feedback on gathered productions, resources and reflections are encouraged.Level 3: Information aggregation and management corresponds to the self-reflection phase where information and current states of students' personal and shared profiles and resources is evaluated by the instructor and learners with the aim to refine and restructure information to align them with learning goals. Self-reflection guides the commencement of a new cycle.
While they admit that the framework has not yet been tested empirically, they hypothesize that this framework can introduce students to and guide them in the effective use of PLEs.
