Reading:
Our reading programme is based on a structured literacy programme called BSLA (Better Start Literacy Approach). Whaea Dawn has completed her post grad studies through the University of Canterbury to teach BSLA. BSLA is an integrated approach to developing vocabulary, oral, listening, spelling, writing and reading skills in the first year of learning, utilising the Ready to Read Phonics Plus texts. Each child also has their own individual list of high frequency words that they practice reading every day. Once they are confident reading the words a new word is added to the list.
Writing:
For writing we are starting with learning how to write our own names. We are learning how to verbally express the stories we want to tell and with help from the teacher record these stories in written form. We are learning how to plan our writing by drawing a picture and making sure that our writing and picture matches. The students are beginning to write their own stories by using the sounds they know to record words they want to write. Some are also using their reading sight words as a personal dictionary.
Mathematics:
Our math progamme is based on a Structed Math Programme called Prime Math. Prime Math is a fun and engaging programme designed to build strong foundational math skills for students. Through interactive activities, hands-on learning, and a structured approach, children develop confidence in numbers, patterns, and problem-solving. The programme encourages a love for math by making learning enjoyable and accessible, setting the stage for future success in school.
