Alex Birtwistle OCC President (2024-2026)
I am your current OCC Club President. I have been on the Board for a decade and am passionate about all things curling. I play in the Monday night and Wednesday Ca$h leagues. I have curled since I was 13 years old so I have reached my quarter-century anniversary this season with this sport. What I lack in skill I make up for in laughs!

Darren McEwen
Darren began curling as a child in Forest, Ontario, and like many Canadians, was inspired by Team Schmirler’s gold medal at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games. What began as a passion has grown into a lifelong connection to curling and the community around it.
Darren now serves as the Executive Director of the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, helping lead national fundraising efforts in support of babies born premature or critically ill. Through his work in curling, he has supported some of Canada’s top teams, managing digital content for Team Jacobs and previously working with Teams Homan, Jones, and Koe.
A proud member of the Ottawa Curling Club and the Rainbow Rockers Curling League, Darren is a two-time Canadian Pride Curling Champion. He has also contributed to the development of the sport through coaching and instruction, leading the Adult Learn to Curl program for nearly a decade and running the Team Homan Junior Curling Camp.
Curling takes Darren across the country throughout the winter, but Ottawa remains home, where many of his closest friendships were built through the game. Wherever he’s travelling, there’s nothing better than getting back to the OCC and catching up with friends and clubmates.
Eddie Chow OCC Past-President (2018-2020)
I have been a member of the Ottawa Curling Club since 2005. I curl in the Wednesday Cash, Thursday Men’s, and Saturday Open leagues (as well as the Rainbow Rockers rental league on Sunday). I’ve held various club roles including Adult Learn To Curl (formerly Getting Started League) instructor (2008-2009, 2013-2014, 2023-25), Thursday Men’s Convenor (2012-2014), OCC Board Director (2014-2018), and OCC President (2018-2020).
I strive to be a curling diplomat. I regularly introduce curling in a safe and fun manner to newbies and enjoy getting to know all curlers off ice.

Fred Barbieri
As a member of the OCC since 1999, I started curling before some members were born. In fact, I helped make one current Cash League curler. I have curled in all OCC leagues or their past equivalent (other than Tuesday Women - although I was invited to spare once). Looking to have a good time, be the surprise sleeper team, and definitely achieve a better record than Eddie Chow. Too few "accomplishments" to mention, but here goes:
2025 Certified Curling Competition Coach
2018 OVCA Mixed C Event Winner
2016 Quebec Challenge Cup Winner (with Eddie)
2008 OCA Best Western Men B Event Provincial Finalist
2006 OVCA Novice Mixed B Event Winner
2004 OCC Thursday Men League Winner
