At Ocean Township School District, we strive to create a positive school climate for our students. To help foster a culture where bullying is not accepted, we implement a number of HIB prevention methods. We emphasize character education, and observe an annual Week of Respect. We encourage students to share concerns in regular class meetings. School counselors provide individual and small group sessions, as well as regular classroom lessons on a variety of social skills.
Students are also instructed on what constitutes an incident of HIB, and what is normal, peer conflict. Students know to tell a trusted adult when they think someone is being bullied, but students are encouraged to solve "small problems" (normal conflict) independently. We use a program called Kelso's Choice to deliver this message. There are nine choices for solving small problems; check out the Kelso's Choice wheel below.
