10 HUMfr - Future Ready is a core Humanities course for year 10 students at Ōtaki College.  Students in year 10 are just beginning to think about their first jobs or tertiary educational path after college.   This means they are thinking about earning money, how taxation works, and even saving for short and long-term goals.  It is also the last mandatory course with Social Sciences learning outcomes, which include an introduction to different systems of governments around the world, how our Aotearoa New Zealand government operates and how to vote. We hope this jam-packed course will introduce students to their possible world beyond college and help them choose senior courses wisely to best prepare them for their future.  But don't worry, this is only the beginning of your journey, and you don't need all the answers!

Also, as a Humanities course, this means students will be continuing to develop their close reading and writing skills, with particular attention to introducing students to reading more extended texts and writing a literary essay in preparation for senior English courses.

This year is also an important academic transition year as most students will attempt their first NCEA level assessments to earn Level 1 Literacy (Reading and Writing) and Numeracy through exam assessments (5 credits for each assessment, totalling 15 L1 credits).  Minimally, our goal is to ensure all students achieve Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy at Ōtaki College.  Earning Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy starts to open the door to tertiary courses and programs, whether students are university-bound or looking at alternative paths to their chosen careers.

There are 2 opportunities each year for students to sit these exams, when they are ready.
