ABOUT US

Are you passionate about saving lives?

Does driving an ambulance or becoming an EMT sound awesome?

Are you pursuing a career in the medical field or emergency services?

Do you want to hang out with current EMS volunteers?

Consider joining SAVAC!

Formed in 1971, the Student Association Volunteer Ambulance Corporation (SAVAC) is the first 100% volunteer and student-run ambulance corporation in the nation. We serve as the primary EMS provider of SUNY Oswego and are a certified NYS Department of Health Basic Life Support ambulance corp.

There’s a place for everyone here!

Students can serve as:

  • Social members, attending our variety of social and team-building events

  • Crew assistants, drivers, and EMTs; providing patient care and/or transportation on the ambulance

  • Officers like the chief or members of the board like the president, responsible for crucial logistics

Our members gain valuable training, experience, connections, and patient contacts that benefit them in their journey towards medical school or professional positions within EMS and Fire Departments across the country.

Additional experience can be gained from traveling to the National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation conference to train with other collegiate agencies from across the country.

SAVAC’s services are FREE to the campus community!

This includes patient care provided by our volunteers, transportation to the hospital, and standbys for events like hockey games. We also provide mutual aid support to the city and town of Oswego, and collaborate with the Oswego City Fire Department, Oswego Town Volunteer Fire Department, and the Oswego County Ambulance Service (Menter Ambulance).

When in service, SAVAC is staffed by at least one NYS certified EMT-Basic who is a trained and cleared SAVAC Attendant, as well as a Certified Emergency Vehicle Operator who is a trained and cleared SAVAC Driver. We are advised by University Police Officer Bullard and former Oswego City Fire Department Advanced EMT-Paramedic Mark Murray.
