Operating Principle:
A laser ceilometer operates by emitting laser pulses vertically into the atmosphere and measuring the time it takes for the pulses to be reflected back from cloud bases. The instrument calculates the height of the cloud layer above the ground through analyzing the delay in the laser pulses.
Advantage: Provides continuous real-time measurements of cloud height with high temporal resolution.
Disadvantage: Laser beam can potentially be hazardous for birds and cause damage to the human eye.
Uncertainty: Laser beam scattering due to the presence of fog or precipitation, causing an error in the measured values.
Operating Principle:
Satellites utilize remote sensing techniques to observe Earth's atmosphere and surface. They detect visible and infrared radiation reflected or emitted by clouds and aerosols. Satellites can infer cloud properties such as altitude, thickness, and particle size distribution based on the radiation data.
Advantage: Provides global coverage and helps obtain measurements in isolated areas with no ground instruments available.
Disadvantage: Difficulty examining clouds at night.
Uncertainty: Regions with multi-layer clouds can affect visibility measurements, and highly reflective regions can cause misinterpretation of cloud structure due to the reflected radiation from the surface.
Operating Principle:
Transmissometers in meteorology measure the attenuation of electromagnetic radiation, typically infrared or visible light, as it passes through the atmosphere. These instruments emit a light beam from a transmitter to a receiver, and the amount of attenuation experienced by the beam is proportional to the atmospheric visibility. The received signal is then analyzed to determine visibility and aerosol concentration.
Advantage: Useful in determining visibility and air quality.
Disadvantage: Struggles in obtaining values in complex terrain or in the presence of light pollution.
Uncertainties: Weather phenomenon such as heavy rain can create high attenuation of the light beam, skewing visibility and air quality measurements.
