Activity Materials
See below.
YI-C Grades: 5-6
Lesson Name: Space Transportation
Concepts: Lift, Gravity, Thrust, and Drag
Technical Skills: Putting the rockets together, following directions, gathering data, testing, cutting correctly, having fun
Problem Solving/Design: Making an effective rocket that travels a certain distance, Designing the shape of the rocket to be aerodynamic
STEM Activity Name: Soda Straw Rocket
Student Tasks/Activities: Create a small rocket made of paper using the template that should travel by blowing air through a straw and then measure the distance that the rocket travels as a baseline/control test. They will repeat the process after they create a rocket of their own design in order to try to get their rocket to fly further than the control test with the standard rocket . When the students make their own rockets, they will be encouraged to build one without the cone on top or the fins and see how the rocket works when it is missing parts.
