STEP Program

"The STEP is a program offered by Mercy University and aims to increase the number of historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students prepared to enter college1. The program is designed to familiarize students with the opportunities available to them in the scientific, technical, health and health related professions and to encourage them to pursue the education and training necessary to enter these fields." A big THANK YOU to The OUFSD Community Schools Project has sponsored the fee for each of the 22 students to participate in the STEP Program at Mercy University.

Currently, we have 22 ninth grade students enrolled in the STEP program. A bus picks them up at OHS. The offerings include Saturday classes, career exploration;, counseling and tutoring, and peer mentoring. Workshops vary but some may include topics such as: Architecture, 3D Printing, Coding, Sports Medicine and more.

Also pre algebra/algebra and earth science support is offered.

There is also an "after school" component periodically offered at OHS. A teacher facilitates a discussion on a topic in the STEM field.

OHS' award winning Science Research Program teachers and students hosted the students in the STEP program for a special orientation/information session. Mr. Piccirillo and Ms. Holmes led a discussion about the Science Research Program, the variety of amazing opportunities it offers and information about applying .
