RAINBOW WORDS
aka High Frequency Words
The purpose of reading HFW is to develop a vocabulary of words the children know instantly. These words are ones that are used repeatedly, particularly in early reading books. To develop these sight words, we have posted the word cards in rows of 10 to reflect a rainbow. Each colored row contains a different level.
In order to move up a level on the rainbow, the student needs to read all the words on the level fluently. The child should not be sounding out each word during testing. If the child knows the words well, they should instantly recognize the words. When they have read all the words correctly they move up to the next level.
The goal with each level is to reach the top of the rainbow. Each time the child passes a level, you will receive a note letting you know what level(s) has been passed and which level the child should work on next. When the student reaches the top of the rainbow, they will receive a certificate and move on to our first grade words. The first grade words are referred to as the Ice Cream Words. These words will be sent home after the child finishes reading 60 Rainbow Words.
Starting at the purple level, ask your child to read all the sight words. Continue until you find out what level your child needs to practice. It is helpful to make flash cards to help your child practice. It is also helpful to have your child write the words they are working on daily.
Once the student has finished their Rainbow sight words, they will receive our Ice Cream word list. These are words that they will start working on in first grade.
The children will be tested on their sight words once a week.
