Frequently Asked Questions

We have 3 productions per year: A Fall Musical, a Winter Competitive One Act, and a Spring Play. Each production is unique in its own way. See the sections below for more information per show.

FAQs: The Fall Musical

What can you tell me about the Musical?

The musical is our first show of the year and our biggest production. Performances for the musical take place in November- a detailed schedule can be found under the 'Calendar' at the top of the page. The selection for the upcoming musical is announced each year in May, at the Drama Awards ceremony.

When are auditions for the musical?

Auditions will be the second day of school, right after the school day in the auditorium. Information about next year's season and audition materials and sign ups will be available via the website starting in June.

How do I audition for the musical?

Students will prepare a short monologue and 30 seconds of a song for their musical audition. Students who are invited back to callbacks will return the following day for a second round of auditions. Auditioners should complete the audition form, sign up for an audition time slot, and come prepared with a selected monologue and song from the provided audition materials- these forms and materials are available by show under the 'Orono High School Theater' tab above.

Does everyone get a role?

Everyone who auditions for the musical is offered a role in the ensemble and gets a chance to be on stage. Many students also sign up to be on crew for the show.

How do I sign up for crew for the musical?

Anyone interested in Crew can complete the Crew Form available on the website. Forms are available by show under the 'Orono High School Theater' tab above.

What is the cost for participating in the musical?

The cost for both cast and crew is $65. This helps cover costumes, sound and lights, set, programs, and more. Payments may be completed through My Payments Plus after rehearsals have begun.

The One Act is a Minnesota State High School League regulated competitive event, where students who are on cast and crew create a 35-minute show and travel to other schools to compete and perform. Performances take place at the end of January- a detailed schedule can be found under the 'Calendar' at the top of the page. The selection for the upcoming one act is announced each year in May, at the Drama Awards ceremony.

When are auditions for the one act?

Does everyone get a role?

By League rules, we are only allowed to have a total of 20 students on cast and crew for the one act, so unfortunately not everyone who auditions is cast. It is competitive, similar to a varsity team for theater.

What can you tell me about the Spring Play?

The Spring Play is our final mainstage production of the year. It is a 'straight play,' meaning a play without any singing or dancing like a musical. Performances take place at the end of April- a detailed schedule can be found under the 'Calendar' at the top of the page. The selection for the upcoming play is announced each year in May, at the Drama Awards ceremony.

When are auditions for the spring play?

Most plays do not allow for expandable ensembles, so there are a limited number of parts. We do frequently cast understudies for the show.  Anyone not cast may choose to sign up for crew to still be involved in the show.

How do I sign up for crew for the spring play?

Anyone interested in Crew can complete the Crew Form available on the website. Forms are available by show under the 'Orono High School Theater' tab above.

FAQs: Drama club and other events

Joining Drama Club is another great way to get involved with OHS Theater! Our Drama club meets twice a month during the school year, and plans numerous events for students.

How do I join Drama Club?

Come to one of our meetings- upcoming meeting dates and locations are posted on the website under the 'Drama Club' tab at the top of the page. Students can also reach out to one of the student Drama Executives to be added to the email list.

Are there other performance opportunities besides the three mainstage shows?

There are! Drama Club hosts a Cabaret for a night of songs and dances- any student in the club can sign up to perform. Additionally, Drama Club organizes the Student One Act Showcase at the end of the year, which is an opportunity for students to write, direct, and/or perform in short plays. Drama Club also partners with organizations like the Orono Foundation for Education to provide student performers for annual events like the Bash.

What kind of other events does Drama Club host?

All kinds! Past events have included movie nights, cabarets, apple picking, ice skating, and more. We also organize an annual Haunted House with the Wayzata Country Club, which serves as a fundraiser, and participate each year in the Homecoming parade. Students who have an idea for a drama club event are encouraged to reach out to the Student Drama Club Executives to make a plan.

What is Drama Camp?

Drama Camp is an annual camp hosted each August as a prelude to the school year and upcoming theatrical season. Students going into grades 9-12 will spend the week working on theatrical skills and preparing their monologues for auditions for the fall musical. It's a great way for incoming students to get to know upperclassmen and make connections before the start of the year. Students can register for the camp through Orono Community Education.

What are lettering points?

Lettering points are the system by which students earn credit for their participation in theater. Lettering points are assigned based on roles completed and events attended throughout the year. Points are totaled cumulatively throughout students' 4 years in high school, and students who qualify based on their point totals are awarded their Letters at the end of the school year at our annual Drama Awards event.

What are Drama Awards?

Drama Awards are the final event of the season each May. Students and their families come together for a night in the auditorium to celebrate the year of theater. The evening is a formal event with a theme voted on by students, and will feature pictures and videos from throughout the year, as well as lettering awards, student-voted awards, and acting and tech awards. The night ends with the announcement of the upcoming season selections for the musical, one act, and spring play.
