What *is* New Zealand culture and society? NZ is a largely a land of immigrants, and even Maori trace back their arrival to the settlement of the pacific from Hawaiki.
In Media Studies, we are interested in the representation of culture in the Media, and how that changes the culture itself.
In this unit of study, you analyse the representation of an aspect of New Zealand culture and society, and what impacts this representation then HAS on New Zealand culture and society. This recursive nature of the media influence is a powerful shaper of people's opinions about themselves and others, and one that Media Studies scholars continue to grapple with and try and understand.
On the left is the assessment for Media Studies 3.3 - Demonstrate understanding of the Media Representation of an aspect of New Zealand culture or society.
In it, you look at an aspect of NZ culture/society, and its representation in NZ Media (ads, tv, film).
Suggested aspects could be:
Students - the "Scarfie"
Men - the "kiwi bloke"
Women - the "kiwi sheila"
"Country" people
South Aucklanders
"Westies"
New Immigrants or 1st generation Kiwis - "New New Zealanders"
The "No.8 Wire Kiwi Innovator"
etc, etc, etc
