Have you heard the word “filbert” before? And then heard the same nut called a ‘hazelnut’?
Every Oregonian knows it’s a filbert.
Oregon designated the filbert as its official state nut in 1989. The name ‘filbert’ comes from French, brought by early settlers. Meanwhile, ‘hazelnut’ was coined by the English and later adopted by early settlers. In 1981, the Oregon Filbert Commission decided to switch to ‘hazelnut’ for global marketing purposes.
Let’s face it, Oregon needs to restore filberts to their former glory.
Approximately 99% of the United States’ filberts are grown in Oregon, primarily in the Willamette Valley. This nut is not only Oregon-grown, but also organ-healthy (get it?). These little oval-shaped nuts are nutrient-dense, are high in vitamin E and folate, which help support cognitive function, and help lower bad cholesterol while boosting good cholesterol.
Plus, Google recognizes “filbert,” and who can argue with Google?
Filberts are the superior name. Rise up and take the world by a filbert storm. ‘Hazelnut’ will be no more. Long live filberts!
