MTSS: Student Supports
Multi-Tiered System of Support
Multi-Tiered System of Support
What is MTSS?
Tier 1 supports are the foundational, schoolwide strategies and resources available to all students to promote academic success, engagement, and well-being. These supports are proactive and designed to meet the needs of the majority of students without requiring individualized plans. Universal supports help create equitable access to learning by offering flexible options and additional assistance when needed.
Tier 1 / Universal Supports Offered:
Testing Center: A structured environment where students can complete assessments with fewer distractions as needed.
Use of Calculator: Students may use calculators to support problem-solving and reduce barriers related to computation.
Math Test Retakes: Opportunities for students to reassess and demonstrate improved understanding of math concepts after initial instruction.
After School Help (Math, Science, English): Teacher-supported sessions available after school to provide extra help, clarification, and academic support.
Mentorship: Access to staff or peer mentors who provide guidance, encouragement, and support for both academic and personal growth.
Use of Wired Headphones for Text-to-Speech: Students can use headphones to access text-to-speech tools, supporting reading comprehension and accessibility.
Tier 2 supports are designed for students who may need additional assistance beyond universal (Tier 1) supports. These interventions are more targeted and provide structured support for students who are at risk of academic or behavioral challenges. Tier 2 supports are typically short-term, goal-oriented, and often delivered in small groups or through regular check-ins to help students build skills and get back on track.
Tier 2 Supports Offered:
Check-In/Check-Out: Daily check-ins with a staff member to set goals, monitor progress, and provide feedback and encouragement twice a day.
Behavior Contract: A structured agreement outlining clear expectations, goals, and incentives to support positive behavior and accountability.
Structured Breaks: Planned breaks during the school day to help students regulate emotions, refocus, and return to learning ready to engage.
Mentoring: Ongoing support from a staff member who builds a relationship with the student and provides guidance, encouragement, and accountability.
Social Emotional Groups: Small group sessions focused on developing skills such as coping strategies, communication, emotional regulation, and problem-solving.
Math RTI (Response to Intervention): Targeted math support in a smaller setting to address specific skill gaps and improve understanding.
Individual Counseling: Short-term, solution-focused counseling to support students with social, emotional, or behavioral concerns.
2x10: A relationship-building strategy where a staff member spends 2 minutes a day for 10 consecutive days connecting with a student to build trust and rapport.
English Language Learners (ELL) Support: Targeted instruction and resources to support students developing English language proficiency.
Violence Prevention: Programs or interventions aimed at teaching conflict resolution, de-escalation strategies, and safe decision making.
Tier 3 interventions are the final step in the MTSS process and are more intensive and individualized than those in Tiers 1 and 2. This tier is for students who require substantial support and personalized intervention plans to make progress. Supports at this level are typically individualized and may involve specialized programs and frequent progress monitoring. Tier 3 teams are individualized, but may include teachers who previously or currently work with the student, administrators, counselors, interventionists, behavior support specialists, and the student's parent/guardian(s).
