The greatest area of learning in this project for me was building a functional structure based only off of an idea. It was a highly creative process which taught me not only about carpentry and using tools but also about adaptation and flexibility.
Building a solid base was critical to maintain the structural integrity of the greenhouse. I spent my first day of building working with just these four beams to ensure that my base was ready to be built upon!
The going was slow at first. I scribbled many notes to myself in my notebook and digitally on top of photos to remind myself of what not to do in the future, if I could help it. Luckily, I made the most mistakes at the start, and they were usually a pretty quick fix.
Building the skeleton of the greenhouse was my favorite part of the construction process. I felt the excitement of the project become tangible as the idea of the greenhouse appeared to come to life.
Putting in these extra skylights was so exciting to be able to do and I think it was a crucial addition to the greenhouse as it supplies the plants with much more light than the single semicircle window. These glass panes are thicker to withstand extreme weather and the frame holds them securely in place.
Being able to plant in the greenhouse was undoubtedly the most exciting part of the process so far.
Picking the greens that I've grown and incorporating them into my meals has been immensely gratifying. I have a variety of greens growing in the greenhouse as of May, including kale, chard, spinach, lettuce, and beet greens.
