Today is my first camping trip. I haven’t done any research yet. This camping trip is going to be the baseline of all of my research. It is my starting point. I’m a little nervous if I’m being honest. Sleeping in a tent is not my first choice, it’s actually a fear of mine. Whatever, I’ll be fine. I better start packing.

So, I’m at the campsite and struggling to keep the fire going. I’m not sure why? I leaned it against the side of the fire ring. It just keeps falling and it’s not really working. I was hoping to cook my chicken over the fire but it’s not easy to keep going so maybe I’ll just go and pick up some takeout.
It’s a little bit later and I drank most of my water so I had to run to the store for some more water. I used a lot of it earlier when I went swimming, it was hot outside.

My dad ordered me this book. It’s called, “The MeatEater Guide to Wilderness Skills and Survival” by Steven Rinella. I’ve started it today and this is the beginning of my research. This book has information from fire to food to sleeping bags. I think it’s gonna be beneficial, it even has pictures! I love pictures. Today I read about fire in the book since I had such issues with my last fire. I think the structure of the fire was all wrong. I might go outside to experiment later on. I am determined to fix my fire mistakes.

FIRE EXPERIMENT DAY! I’m a little nervous about trying Steve Rinella’s tactics but I’m also excited. Hopefully this helps keep my fire going so that I can use it for cooking in the future. His directions are pretty easy to follow along, there are pictures.
Update: IT WORKED! Super excited that I was able to figure this out on my own. I decided to cook some bacon on it since I was hungry.

I am currently camping in the woods for three days and it is POURING RAIN! Are you kidding me? I am cold. I am wet. My tent is soaked. I might go home, this is NOT fun. I can't even get a fire going, it's raining too hard.

Update: I lasted all day yesterday and through the night. I woke up this morning and it's still pouring. I have decided to head home. This isn't fun anymore. I am glad I stuck it out through the night, I never would have done that before I started all this senior project stuff. I am proud of myself for staying as long as I did.

Today I am meeting with outdoor educator, Amy Braun. We are going for a hike in nature to learn about edible plants in Vermont. I am SO EXCITED! I think food is the most exciting part of the project for me. Plants and animals are so intriguing - how you harvest them (hunting and picking), how you can prepare them (fire, drying, etc), and how you eat them. I am so excited to gain some knowledge from Amy.

My evening with Amy was AWESOME! I had no idea that there were so many edible plants in our backyards. Some plants that I see every single day ARE EDIBLE AND I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW. It's crazy to think that others have no clue as well. There should be more outdoor educators in school because this was an awesome experience. I had no idea that queen ann's lace is edible. I see those everywhere! Here's a picture:

Hunting season is approaching quickly. I am hoping to get a deer in Vermont or a hog in Florida. I have some cool spots in both states to go hunting. I read a little bit about preparing your wild game after your shoot it. I'm excited to see if I get anything. I would love to get something! Hunting for your own food in a survivalist situation could be fishing, trapping, or shooting. In my research I saw that survivalists use trapping methods as they can use natural resources. Personally, I plan to shoot my game. Some survivalists bring firearms with them as trapping is not always successful and you need a successful backup plan. Hopefully I see some game.

I only saw doe.... You can't shoot doe during rifle season. Now onto hog hunting! Here's a picture of a sweet doe that wandered near me for almost 2 hours!

I GOT A HOG! I went hog hunting in Florida and got a female hog. It was a perfect size, too! You don't want them too big because the meat isn't as good and they can't be too small because that is a piglet. I am so excited to try this meat. It took awhile to find one but we came up on a herd and I shot from about 120 yards away and got it right in the heart! It was a good kill.
