My goal was to be able to learn basic firefighting skills and learn how to operate SCBA.
What is SCBA?
SCBA stands for self-contained breathing apparatus. SCBA is a device that is worn to provide breathable air in a dangerous atmosphere. SCBA consists of a backpack and harness, air cylinder, positive pressure mask, values and safety gauges and alarms.
Full firefighter gear including airpack and facemask can weigh up to 75lbs!
My product was learning how to be comfortable using SCBA, and learning how to use firefighting equipment properly.
This image shows my mentor Andy and I during one of the SCBA trainings, dragging a dummy patient together.
I quickly learned it is not as easy as it looks in the movies. It is very hard and heavy to move with the gear, I found I have to work twice as hard with my gear on so I can do my task correctly and quickly.
This picture is from our ladder training in the fall of '21, I am at the top of a 100 foot ladder, I climbed to the top of with Andy.
This image is from the same ladder training as the image to the left.
This image shows me breathing from SCBA gear and learning the controls of the ladder truck and bucket.
This image is of me learning how to use SCBA equipment and gearing up for the very first time, I was nervous.
Above, is a video of me donning my fire gear on under 1 minute.
The two above images are from a day I will never forget. On the left, shows Andy on the ground after he made me drag him across a church floor so I got the full fire training experience (both of us in full gear). Keep in mind full firefighter gear can weigh up to 75lbs!
On the right you see me drenched in sweat post taking of my SCBA mask after going through a difficult obsical course.
