The assignment was based on the summer reading of The Kite Runner. We were placed in teams of 4 to complete a character analysis of the characters in The Kite Runner. We divided the work, where each member chose a character to analyze and present to the entire class. During this assignment, we each gained a deeper understanding of each character in the book. Even though we manage to gain a deeper understanding, we also encounter some issues as we completed the project. My partners did not understand the concept of FOIL which caused them to falsely identify the FOIL of two characters. Next time we would rewrite the FOIL and ensure that all team members are on the same page when analyzing characters.
We were assigned to create a creative response to "Sing, Unburied, Sing" as a way of wrapping up the novel. Out of the many options listed to us, I decided to do a poem that would focus on Leonie. I decided to do the poem based on Leonie due to her troubled past. Another reason, I chose Leonie was because of the way she ended the book doing drugs and ultimately being like a lost soul. I based some of the lines from the novel since I felt it described Leonie very well. After getting inspiration from the novel I then continue to write lines on her personal life. Throughout the novel, she is shown to be a bad mother, addicted to drugs, and struggles to deal with the fact that her mother is dying. Throughout the poem, I tried to embody the idea of how broken she was. I felt that the poem wasn't formatted correctly and was more freeform yet I wanted it to rhyme. I would also like to add more to the background cause her life isn't all bad since she still has the love of her life, Michael.
During the third marking period, we focused mainly on poems to prepare us for the AP test. After going over poems, we were then tasked with analyzing a poem. After looking through various poems, we decided to deeply analyze "Becoming a Horse" by Ross Gay. My group was composed of Savir and Michael. We split the work up to finish the project on time. We each read the poem and circled lines we felt were important and wrote the meaning of the poem after reading it three times. We then came together to answer the questions asked by our teacher and put them into a slideshow. The only thing we did poorly was properly identify the literal meaning since we wrote the meaning of the poem. Overall, we manage to complete the project and present the poem to the class properly.
After reading, a text about a lifeguard we were assigned to write a letter about what the ending of the passage meant to a reader. The passage was about a lifeguard who was telling the story incorrectly since he felt women were obsessed with him but as the story unfolds lies were found. For example, he talked about this older woman wanting him yet at the end is revealed she barely noticed him. Near the end, he has a traumatic experience where a girl almost dies from drowning but a woman who he thought was obsessed with him manages to save the girl. He begins to break down and goes to the woman's house at night to thank her for saving the girl and opening his eyes. The author ends the passage for the reader to interpret what the lifeguard did with this knowledge to impact his future. I can do a lot to improve this assignment since it was not my best work because I did not captivate a clear answer to the prompt. I summarized the passage in my prompt which was something I should not have done. I also had many grammar mistakes in my writing. I believe to improve in this type of assignment I should focus on properly understanding the meaning of the passage and then focus on the prompt.
