Welcome to 6th grade! We are so excited to start another great school year with our Chargers! The first few weeks, we will be spending time learning the expectations for OMS students, getting to know each other, and setting routines to guide us towards a successful school year. We will begin the year with citing evidence to make inferences about a text (RL/RI.6.1). Our classes will participate in a variety of activities to learn how to identify clear evidence that supports their inferences using images, videos, and texts, and will explain their thinking using ACE-style paragraphs. We will be reading the short story Charles by Shirley Jackson to apply these skills.
Mrs. Sigler’s Class:
Please note that all students will need a spiral or composition notebook for my class. If they need one, please have your student speak to me directly, and we will get them the supplies they need!
Our team received Chromebooks on Friday! The expectation is that students charge their Chromebook every night and bring it with them to school every morning. We spent a lot of time reviewing appropriate computer usage. Please encourage your child to use their Chromebook with CARE!
I am so excited to start another great year with 6th grade! We know that the transition to middle school can be fun, weird, and very scary for students and their families. Please do not hesitate to reach out at any time and let me know if there is anything your student, or you, needs!
Mrs. Joines’ Class:
Students will be using a composition notebook in class. I have extra if anyone needs one- please have your student grab one off of the shelf.
Laptops were distributed this week to students. Please remind them to charge it each night and to leave the charger at home.
I have enjoyed getting to know your children the first week of school. We have a really great group of students and I am excited for a successful year in ELA!
Over the next few weeks, we will focus on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals. Students have been shown how to access the online book as well as the activities that have been assigned.
Math teachers hold Smart Lunch every Wednesday. Our curriculum this year also has a parent site with resources for helping at home. Make sure to check out Envision Family Engagement Website!
Mrs. Kiger’s Class:
As a class we went through a lot of procedures and expectations last week and ended the week with introductions to our first unit. Classwork and Homework will begin to be assigned this week. Please make sure you are check Canvas for assignments.
We do use the online resource, Savvas, which students have been shown how to get to. They completed a Readiness Assessment on Friday in Savvas. This is also where students will be assigned some classwork assignments. Please check in with them that they know how to access it!

Mrs. Merritt’s Class:
This week, the students started recording and tracking their growth. You will see they took their first pre-assessment, and we will start heavy on curriculum next week.
Next week, they will get homework if it takes more than 45 minutes to complete at home, students should attend Smart Lunch for additional help. Please feel free to contact me with questions. It will be a great year.
Science
Last week we set up our notebooks and learned all about the scientific method.
Mrs. Kiger’s Class:
Last week, we organized our binders and completed two assignments: “What Is a Scientist?” and Vocabulary. These will count as participation and classwork grades. This week, we’ll dive more into our Paper Planes Activity!
Exploring Geography! We will start off the year learning about the five themes of geography: Location, Place, Human-Environment Interaction, Movement, and Region. These themes help students understand the world around them, how people interact with their environment, and how regions and cultures connect across the globe.
AIG specialists will be meeting with 6th graders to conduct interviews and fill out their Differentiated Education Plan. This plan will eventually be sent to their teacher to sign and sent home for parent signature, and determines how services will be delivered for Academically and Intellectually Gifted students.
