A short, humorous news story
Usually only 1 to 3 paragraphs
Usually contains puns/jokes and has a fun vibe
Amusing in nature
Put your bright idea (get it) on a card in the “topic idea” list on Trello
Once you see that your editor moved your card to “Writer Approved,” start your article!
Your article should be on the short end (only 2 to 3 paragraphs) and have a fun tone
Headlines are suggested to include a pun of some kind (just have fun with it)
Once you have finished writing, move your card to “ready for section editor” and “@” your editor
When your editor is done looking over your amazing article, they will move the card to “ready for section editor re-writes” so you can make any corrections they might have suggested
Once you are done with step 6, you will move it back to “ready for section editor.” This back-and-forth can happen a number of times before the editor decides to move your article on to “ready for editor-in-chief”
The same process will occur for editor-in-chief and Ms. McCranie
If you got any interviews (which is unlikely) you will need to complete an AAC
Also make sure you have an appropriate picture or graphic for your article
Look for something lighthearted, with more personality than standard new briefs
Might ‘distract’ readers from more serious news
Comic relief; might provide a “kicker” ending, pun, etc.
Keep it short and simple
Brights often feature animals; short stories of funny instances featuring them, etc.
A piece of good news -- whether it regards a funny or simple story about space, a species taken off the extinct animals list, etc.
Things to bring out positivity
