Welcome historians and geographers to Social Studies 6! This year we will dive into the wonderous world of ancient civilizations. History is an interpretive and alive subject that expands your perspective about life and the world around you, while helping you better understand who you are and where you and society as a whole came and evolved from. This course takes a regional look at the major civilizations of the ancient world beginning with the earliest humans and ending at the height of the Roman Empire. This course covers a large scope of topics, with units about Early Humans, Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Kush, the Ancient Hebrews, Ancient Greece, Ancient India, Ancient China, and Ancient Rome! We will consider broad questions like: What characterizes a civilization? Why do civilizations rise and fall when they do? What role does geography play in the development of civilizations? What connections are there between the ancient and contemporary worlds?
My hope is that this course will teach you a lot, challenge you at times, and serve as a strong foundation for future social studies courses at the secondary level.
Curriculum follows the Grade 6 California State Standards for History Social Science: https://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/histsocscistnd.pdf.
