Throughout our course, we will continue to build student's reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills 6th grade takes a deeper approach and expands on these skills and provides an opportunity to practice close reading and writing skills. Our curriculum teaches the 6th grade Language Arts Common Core State Standards for California: https://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/finalelaccssstandards.pdf. This course takes a skill-based approach, with practice and application through short stories, poetry, and novel studies on three major works: A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, The Adventures of Ulysses by Bernard Evslin, and The Giver by Lois Lowry. Parents, I encourage you to read these novels alongside your student.
Membean is a personalized instructional platform for vocabulary development. 6th Grade Humanities students will be expected to train for 30 minutes for two fifteen minute sessions per week (Monday through Friday) at 70% accuracy for full credit. Membean is weekly homework worth 10 points. The goal is to provide an individualized approach to enhancing vocabulary proficiency which, in turn, will boost students' written and oral communication. Membean is routine homework every week for the whole school year in Language Arts.
I have provided a link to Membean's article "A Guide for New Students" as a reference.
